Yevshan-Zillya is a creative ensemble dedicated to reviving steppe singing traditions from the Zaporizhzhia region. Through ethnographic research, fieldwork, and emotionally powerful performances, they bring the voices of southeastern Ukraine’s past into the present — especially those from war-affected regions. Their recent collaborations with leading Ukrainian cultural institutions show their commitment to truth, memory, and resistance through music. The ensemble is led by folklorist and vocalist Vyacheslav Vinchura.
REPERTOIRE
The group conducts ethnographic fieldwork in war-affected and occupied villages of southeastern Ukraine, recording ancient songs directly from local tradition bearers. They then reconstruct and perform these songs in a historically informed, yet emotionally resonant manner. Their aim is not just to preserve endangered cultural memory, but to present it as a living, breathing voice of Ukraine’s steppe heritage.
