The Theatre on Pechersk was founded in 2000.
Its core acting troupe was formed by the graduating class of the Kyiv State Institute of Theatre Arts (now Kyiv National University of Theatre, Cinema and Television named after I. K. Karpenko-Kary), under the mentorship of People's Artist of Ukraine Mykola Rushkovskyi.
During their student years, this group created performances that later became the foundation of the theatre's repertoire.
In its early years, the theatre received support from People's Artist of the USSR Kyrylo Lavrov. The theatre space on 3 Shovkovychna Street was renovated, and from 2004, it became the first home of the company. In 2010, the theatre relocated to a new venue at 5 Nemirovych-Danchenko Street, where it continues to operate to this day.
In 2017, the theatre was granted the status of an academic institution.
Over 23 years, more than 55 productions have been staged. Many of them participated in international theatre festivals in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Sweden.
The theatre and its actors have received multiple awards from the Kyiv Pectoral Theatre Prize. Productions such as Man of La Mancha, The Master and Margarita, The Law of Tango, The Libertine, Happiness, and The Ship Will Not Come were highly praised by critics and received awards in various categories.
The production The Universe in a Nutshell was recognized as the Best Experimental and Exploratory Performance at the 2019 GRA All-Ukrainian Festival Award.
All theatre actors actively work in feature films and television series.
Currently, the theatre employs 32 actors: 13 are permanent members of the company, while others are guest performers from various theatres.
From its founding until November 21, 2023, the theatre’s Director and Artistic Director was Merited Artist of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kryzhanivskyi.
Since November 2023, the position has been held by Merited Artist of Ukraine Ihor Rubashkin.
