At the Bouquet Kyiv Stage 2024 festival the DakhTrio will perform a chamber opera ‘Stus: The Passerby’.
The performance is based on the poetry of Vasyl Stus, a Ukrainian poet who, in the tragic circumstances of the soviet era, continued to fortify his spirit and ‘hold a candle above his head’, even in the detention camps where he died.
DakhTrio is a project by musicians and actors of the CCA "DAKH": Sofia Baskakova (voice), Ihor Dymov (double bass, voice), and Volodymyr Rudenko (piano, voice). The main idea of the project was to give a voice to Ukrainian poetry so that all the meanings laid down by the author could be heard and revealed. The instruments of DakhTrio are voice, music and theatre, but everything serves the Word.
In the opera ‘Stus: The Passerby’, a female voice sounds like a mantra of truth, justice and the thirst for life. The musical and dramatic form reveals the poetry and the personality of the poet, giving it a new vigour, allowing the contemporary audience to perceive the intricate philosophical themes laid down by Stus in a sensual and intellectual way.
