At this year's festival, our regular attendees and long-time fans – the film crew – will present their cinematic project, "From the Fragments."

This short film was conceived as a psychoanalytic visual essay exploring how a person, who has experienced loss, tries to piece her together "from the fragments" of memories, dreams, and physical sensations – finding her reflection on the other side of the mirror when the Other vanishes.

The heroine lives in Kyiv in present times and sees dreams with the common plot that takes place eighty years ago. In these dreams, she is looking for her home and is waiting for her beloved husband. Dreams are permeated with anxiety and foreboding of war, which may leave her without her loved one and her home.

The film intertwines multiple timeframes: the pre-war era of the 1940s, which becomes a similar pre-war time during the 2022 Ukrainian war, and the realm of the unconscious, not bound by the chronology of events but only by the experience of trauma and loss.

The film was shot before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the editing was done during the war. At that time, the film crew had no idea that the war would soon engulf the entire territory of Ukraine.

The team working on the film included:

Screenplay and Director – Olena Hruzdeva
Cinematographer – Antonina Simonova
Editing – Valeria Buradzhiyeva
Lead role and voice-over – Olena Hruzdeva
English translation – Valeria Buradzhiyeva
