From ancient times, people who crafted fabric sought ways to embellish it in various ways. Different embroidery techniques, ornaments, appliqué – all of these were widely used by Ukrainian women to create unique patterns on traditional clothing, towels, tablecloths, pillowcases, curtains, etc.
One of the methods of fabric decoration was also block printing. It is believed to have been around even during the times of Kyivan Rus. Block printing involves decorating fabric by applying various patterns and designs onto the cloth using special carved boards, molds, wooden stamps, presses, and more.
The technique of block printing was relatively simple – essentially, it involved transferring the design from a carved board onto the fabric. However, like any craft, block printing had its subtleties and techniques.
Unfortunately, with the emergence of a wide selection of factory-produced fabrics in the early 20th century, the technique of block printing vanished from everyday life.
Our masterclass provides an opportunity to engage in the revival and reinterpretation of applying Ukrainian ornamentation to clothing. The symbol of the Tree of Life from 18th-century towels from the collection of Dmytro Yavornytsky and ornaments from the clothing of Cossack leaders from the 17th-18th centuries from the collection of the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after Vasyl Tarnovsky will be the pattern to use for printing.  
We will create our own personal design, using stamps with archaic Tree of Life images, and imbue our garments with meaning and history passed down through generations – combining the era of Kyivan Rus and the 21st century!
