Saint Sophia Cathedral: A Thousand Years of History
Built during the reigns of Volodymyr the Great and Yaroslav the Wise by "masters from Greece," Saint Sophia Cathedral has amazed visitors for more than a thousand years with its architecture and monumental frescoes. Its walls have witnessed some of the most significant events in the history of Kyivan Rus: the enthronement ceremonies of princes, receptions of foreign ambassadors, the signing of political agreements, the writing of chronicles, and the establishment of the first known library in Kyivan Rus.
The remarkable frescoes that have survived to this day form a unique visual narrative of the earthly life of Jesus Christ and the Christian saints. The image of the Virgin Orans captivates visitors with its beauty, majesty, and profound symbolism. For centuries, a legend has endured that her unwavering presence and divine power protect Kyiv and all of Ukraine.
