For over a millennium, Ukraine has been and remains a member of the European family. This guided tour of Saint Sophia Cathedral is dedicated to revealing our historical background, cultural commonalities, and shared worldview.
The walls of Saint Sophia of Kyiv have stood since the 11th century, witnessing the signing of both political and peace treaties. Its ancient frescoes emphasize the special role of the princely family in the socio-political life of the country and the establishment of Christianity. The diplomatic marriages of ruling dynasties from Europe and Kyiv contributed to solving security issues and advancing statehood: Grand Prince Volodymyr married Byzantine princess Anna, and his son Yaroslav wed the daughter of the Swedish king, Ingegerd — their union brought forth three future queens of Europe.
During the tour, we will attempt to decipher ancient graffiti inscriptions that reveal fascinating details about our historical past, see the unique portrait of the princely family in the central part of the cathedral, and immerse ourselves in a meditative space of live music.
The sound of plucked string instruments — domra and guitar — will unfold a tender and profound dialogue between the Ukrainian soul and European tradition. Baroque works by Telemann, Vivaldi, and Sanz, along with contemporary Ukrainian music by Hanna Havrylets, will offer the audience a state of inner calm, luminous focus, and spiritual resonance.
This journey through centuries and meanings will take us to the living heart of Europe — beating in Ukraine.
