Special Open-Air Screening of the Documentary With Love from the Front by Alisa Kovalenko
We invite you to an open-air screening at the Bouquet Kyiv Stage Festival in Sophia Kyivska.
In February 2022, filmmaker Alisa Kovalenko, keeping a promise she had made to herself, joined an assault unit of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army and spent four months on the Kyiv and Kharkiv fronts. During this time, Alisa wrote letters and recorded fragmentary videos of life at the front — intended as a legacy of memory and love for her 5-year-old son Theo, in case she never returned. This intimate, poetic archive became the heart of a film about the powerful force of love in the brutal reality of war — a love that inspires resistance to the enemy and the sacrifice of one’s life for the sake of children, the future, and freedom.
Her letters to the future, older Theo are interwoven with a lyrical diary of life on the front line: daily routines, endless waiting, quiet reflections in trenches and dugouts, watching ants in the soil, the beauty of landscapes, and tender moments of closeness and friendship among comrades — all set against the backdrop of shelling, ruins, and loss.
This film honors the memory of all those soldiers who went to war for the future of their children, becoming a bridge of remembrance between generations whose peaceful lives were brutally torn apart by Russia’s invasion.
