SAINT SOPHIA OF KYIV: A FIRST ENCOUNTERGuided Tour for Children Aged 6–10
Young schoolchildren are invited on a fascinating journey to the heart of ancient Kyiv—to the magnificent eleventh-century Saint Sophia Cathedral—where they will become young explorers uncovering the secrets of one of Ukraine's oldest and most treasured landmarks.
Children will discover how scholars study the cathedral: uncovering ancient frescoes, deciphering hidden graffiti inscriptions, and examining mosaics and architectural details. They will learn why the wall paintings have faded over time and explore the meanings of such intriguing terms as fresco, graffiti, Oranta, and Pantocrator.
Participants will have the opportunity to hold pieces of smalti—the coloured glass used to create the cathedral's mosaics—admire the gilded iconostasis with its Royal Doors, and visit the tomb of Prince Yaroslav the Wise and his wife, Ingegerd.
Combining learning with play, this programme transforms a first encounter with Saint Sophia into an unforgettable adventure for young explorers of history.
