The Roaring 1920sA concert of music by Ukrainian composers Borys Yanivsky and Kostiantyn Shypovych
The concert “The Roaring 1920s: Borys Yanivsky, Kostiantyn Shypovych” explores the works of forgotten Ukrainian avant-gardists. Two composers — 50-year-old Kharkiv native Yanivsky and 16-year-old Kyivite Shypovych — experiment boldly: imitating factory and railway sounds, inventing new rhythms and sonic combinations, drawing inspiration from jazz and cinema. Their artistic pursuits resonate with the works of the boldest innovators in the US, France, and Germany. However, Stalinist terror erased any recognition they might have received. Shypovych was repressed and died young. Yanivsky’s legacy was forgotten, and even now — in the year of his 150th anniversary — it remains largely unknown.
Young performer and researcher Tymish Melnyk presents the piano music, challenging the canon and reshaping our understanding of Ukrainian art.
