"The Serpent's Lair": Son Sovy and Multagitprop

Performers:
Yevheniia Diachuk,
Mykhailo Sarana,
Kyrylo Tsukanov.

Showing the collection of Ukrainian avant-garde cartoons of the 1920s "Multagitprop" will be accompanied by the trio Son Sovy.

The collection includes the so called 'animated posters', feuilletons, and promotional trailers, first collected together and attributed by Dovzhenko Centre in 2013. Being often anonymous, they have been preserved in the compilation of newsreels from 1929-1930: "The Film Week of VUFKU", "The Film Week" and "The Film Magazine", whose plots preceded the demonstration of the films in cinemas.
Marked by the influence of constructivism, early Ukrainian avant-garde cartoons of the 1920s were a field of both artistic and technological experiments.
Son Sovy is a mini-orchestra consisting of keyboards, cello, and saxophone.
The band's music is a carefully thought-out mix of styles' insanity: academic music, jazz, and electro. The main feature of their sound is a combination of tenor saxophone and cello. The band's members say it is the music for a film which has not yet been shot.

The programme includes:

- The animated poster "Dnieprelstan" (directed by Yevhen Makarov), All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU), 1927;
- The animated poster-trailer "The Sold Appetite", VUFKU, 1927;
- The animated poster "The State Loan", VUFKU, 1928;
- The animated film-feuilleton "The Fairy Tale of General Disarmament" (directed by M. Weizmann), VUFKU, 1929;
- The animated film-feuilleton "The Absentee" (directed by Roitman), VUFKU, 1929;
- The animated film-feuilleton "Save Paper!" (directed by Roitman), VUFKU, 1929;
- The animated poster "The Palace of Arts of the USSR", directed by N. Khodataev , 1930.
The video was given by National Center named after Oleksandr Dovzhenko

The musicians promise the programme to be multicoloured and having different moods, ranging from a relaxing ambient story about the adventures and journeys of the Serpent from his Lair around adjusting territories to atonal pieces.
